David Chan

I write songs and perform music for the pure enjoyment of the activity. I have played the acoustic guitar now for over 30 years. My main influences are varied but I enjoy all acoustic guitar music ranging from ragtime to folk songs. I do not write in any particular style.

You will find on here some numbers that I have written plus a few that I have played of other people's. If I have any ambitions musically is to get buskers to play "Neon God's Laughter" which is a song that has taken me two decades to complete. This song follows a chordal structure reminiscent of early 60's American pop. I wrote the first two verses in the Thatcher era when I observed the down and outs in London. The contrasts between the crowds of clubbers and boozers in Leicester Square and the homeless in the cardboard city beneath the South Bank really affected me. The middle eight was suggested by a young guy down on luck walking with a flapping shoe walking along the street. It took me until 2004 for to get the last verse.

I am also quite proud of "It's Life". I first performed this in the eighties with a band of colleagues from the CEGB. The version loaded here was recorded in July 2007 with the help of Ian Green who managed to make me sound professional.

In a similar vein, I also enjoy writing poetry. In April/Winter, I have included in the lyrics a poem that works well, in my opinion, with the song.

David has written a book called Dingoes and Marsupial Lions. It basicly describes how larger, slower companies are being out maneuvered by smaller, nimbler companies. RareList is a good example

The book is an imaginative instruction manual on how to build and sustain a profitable business based on Communities of Interest (CoI).

It starts with the enlightening and relevant story of how the dingo became the top predator in Austrailia, displacing the marsupial lion which became extinct.
